Troubleshooting a Water Heater That Won't Deliver

Winter water heater trouble usually comes from sediment insulating the element from the water, a tripped breaker, a failed heating element, or a gas pilot light that's gone out. Try these checks before you call for water heater repair. Gas heater: check the pilot light. Drafts, dust or a brief gas interruption can put it out. Relight it using the instructions on the side of the unit, usually by holding a reset button while you apply a spark. If it flickers or goes out again within a few minutes, the thermocouple is likely dirty or misaligned, or the gas supply is restricted. Schedule a heating system repair instead of relighting it over and over. Electric heater: check the breaker. It's usually a double-pole breaker in the 30-amp range. A tripped breaker sits in the middle position. Push it fully to 'OFF', then back to 'ON', wait 15 to 30 minutes, and run a hot tap. That's a gas leak. Turn off the gas supply valve, get everyone out (pets too), open windows on the way, and call your gas supplier and a plumber from outside.
