Why Bathtub Drains Clog: and How to Fix Them

Mineral Build-Up
Hard water, common across Plainfield and Will County, leaves mineral deposits that steadily reduce flow.
Step 1: Remove the Drain Stopper
Step 2: Use a Plunger
Cover the drain
Leave enough standing water to submerge the plunger cup. That creates the seal.
Position and press firmly
Center the cup over the drain so it fully covers the opening, and press down for a tight seal.
Plunge in a steady rhythm
Push and pull with even force for 20 to 30 seconds. That dislodges most soft clogs.
Test the drain
Run hot water. If it drains freely, you're done. If it's still slow, move to step 3.
Step 3: Baking Soda and Vinegar
Pour the baking soda
Pour about half a cup of baking soda into the drain. This works best on soap scum and soft organic build-up, and it deodorizes.
Add the vinegar
Follow right away with a cup of white vinegar. The fizzing is the point.
Let it sit for 15 minutes
Cover the drain if you can and let the reaction loosen the grime.
Flush with hot water
Run hot water for a full minute and check whether the drain flows freely.
Step 4: Use a Plumbing Snake
Feed the snake into the drain
A hand-crank drain snake, or auger, reaches clogs deep in the pipe. Push the cable in slowly until you feel resistance. That's the clog.
Rotate the handle
Turn the handle clockwise to break up the clog or hook it.
Retrieve the debris
Pull the snake out slowly. It may bring a fistful of hair and soap scum with it.
Flush thoroughly
Run hot water for a couple of minutes to clear what's left.
Step 5: Check the Drain Trap
Place a bucket under the trap
The blockage may be in the P-trap, the curved pipe below the drain. Water will spill when you open it, so have a bucket ready.
Unscrew the trap
Use a wrench or pliers on the slip nuts at each end of the curved section.
Clean the trap
Remove the debris and rinse the trap under running water.
Reassemble and test
Hand-tighten the slip nuts, snug them with pliers, then run water and check the joints for leaks.

- Clean the drain stopper and the area around it every few weeks, soap scum accumulates fast
- Keep non-disposable items, cotton swabs, packaging, small toys, out of the tub drain
